#23 Summarize your thoughts

1. What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
My favorite exercise was Flickr. I had not heard of Flickr and I really enjoyed the exercise and discovery of all the things you can do with Flickr toys, such as creating trading cards. I passed this discovery on to my granddaughter’s soccer team.

2. How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
It made me more confident in my own abilities and eager to discover new technology. I plan on going back to look at some of the sites from the Web 2.0 awards list to explore further.

3. Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
I was familiar with some of the sites like YouTube, but this program opened up so many more avenues for exploring the internet and tools like Zoho Writer. It was also fun learning how to create an Avatar.

4. What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
Nothing. I thought the program was very well organized and I liked the fact that I could do it at my own pace.

5. If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again chose to participate?
Yes, I would like to participate if another program is offered.

6. How would you describe your learning experience in a few words or a few sentences, so we can share our successes and promote this program?
I am really glad that this program was offered to us. I had times that I was frustrated trying to complete an exercise but with being persistent and with help especially from Debbie Ruth I was able to complete all the exercises. Thank you, Deb. I feel that this program was very worthwhile and I had fun along the way. I certainly know a lot more now than I did when I started. It has opened up a new world which I plan to continue exploring and learning even more.

Week 9 #22 Downloadable audiobooks

I went through the Overdrive Digital Media guided tour and Introduction to NetLibrary. I had heard of Overdrive and NetLibrary but was not familiar with Project Gutenberg. I went to that site and looked at the top 100 ebooks downloaded yesterday. I set up a NetLibary account. I searched browse by subject and looked at the different subjects and what was available. I found a few titles that I may be interested in downloading at a later time.

Week 9 #21 Podcasts

I was not that familiar with podcasts. I had heard people talking about them but until this exercise I hadn't searched for one. I went to Yahoo podcasts and I found NPR: Story of the day. I searched Podcast.net and Podcastalley.com and Yahoo podcasts. I liked Yahoo podcasts the best. I added the NPR: story of the day to my bloglines and I also found a podcast on US soccer. I searched also for book reviews NPR books has 947 subscribers. I also found Frommers.com podcast that gives travel information.

Week 9 #20 YouTube

I looked at YouTube. I have seen videos on YouTube before. I searched for a few things like Country Line dancing and I found 2 videos done by one of the DJ's that we dance with. I saw one cute video of a little girl in Elementary school talking about her library. I also searched for soccer. I went to the game when DC United played the LA Galaxy with David Beckham, I thought I would look for Beckham videos. Here is a video of David Beckham scoring a goal with his famous bend it like Beckham shot. I also found I Love Lucy clips. I enjoyed going back and seeing clips from some of the classic I Love Lucy shows.

I can see how the Library could use YouTube to promote Library programs and services.

Week 8 #19 Web 2.0 awards

I went to the Web 2.0 awards list and I spent a great deal of time just looking at the sites. I think I will go back and look at some that seemed very interesting. The one that I picked to write about on my blog is http://upcoming.yahoo.com/. It is a site that you can search for new events to attend in your area and around the country. Join groups and find out what people who share your interests are attending. I searched for libraries in Maryland and it brought up Worcester County Public Library events. You could use this to search on areas that you visit to see what events are going on. I searched on find events -libraries and where-United States. There were events listed from all over the country.

Week 7# 18 Zoho Writer

I created an account in Zoho writer. I like the fact that you can access it from anywhere and I also liked that it allows multiple users to work on a document simultaneously and share documents. I looked at the templates that are available. You can do basically the same thing that you can in Microsoft Word. I tried using different fonts, colors, bold and underline. I also found that the same control keys for bold, underline etc. work in Zoho as they do in word. One feature that I liked was that you can publish your document to your blog. I created my blog entry in zoho writer and then published it to my blog.

smile I thought I would add a smiley just for fun.

I also created a Google docs account. I am somewhat familiar with Google docs as I have worked with the Great Books spreadsheet on Google docs.

Week 7 #17 Sandbox wiki

I added an entry of one of my favorite things to do to the Maryland Libraries Sandbox. It was easy creating my page, but then I was confused a little on how to add it and to add my blog. Thanks, Deb for helping me.

Week 7 #16 Wikis

I used all of the resources to learn about wikis. I was familiar with wikipedia but that was the only wiki that I had seen. Wiki, meaning quick in Hawaiian, was developed to allow for easy and fast collaborative development and editing of a website. I looked at all of the library wikis that were listed. Library 2.0 in 15 minutes a day had a 15 minutes a day bibliography that had a master list of 2.0 sites that was very interesting to explore. I liked the Book Lover's wiki. I think wikis would work well for a committee that is working on a project together so everyone could add comments or information to help the committee come to a completed project. As far as a personal use I am active in the Relay for Life and I could see our team or committee using a wiki to be able to share experiences, comments, suggesstions and photos from Relay and to share with other Relays.

Week 6 #15 Library 2.0

Library 2.0 is the term used to describe a new set of concepts for developing and delivery of library services.

I enjoyed the You Tube video “The machine is us/ing us”.

I read a few of the perspectives on Web 2.0.

I read the article “Away from the “icebergs” by Rick Anderson. It was interesting that he mentioned that they have seen a 55 percent drop in circulation rates over the past twelve years.
He also mentioned the "come to us" model of library services , and that we need to find new ways to bring our services to our patrons. I feel HCPL is doing this now with the information that we offer over the web as searching the catalog and access to searching other databases etc.

I also think that patrons will still want to check out a book to read and curl up with instead of reading it on the computer screen. It has been exciting to learn with the 23 things and it will be exciting to see what the future will bring for libraries.

Week 6 #14 Technorati

I looked at Technorati and searched for Learning 2.0. There were 25,934 blog posts about Learning 2.0. Searching with blog directory I found 497 blogs. Searching for Learning 2.0 tags, this brought up blogs, videos and pictures. I did a search for Cal Ripken Jr. and I found a video of a photo montage of Cal Ripken Jr. through his career that was very well done and other videos.

Week 6 #13 Del.icio.us

On to # 13 del.icio.us. I had never heard of del.icio.us until learning 2.0. I watched the video and looked at del.icio.us using the PLCMCL2 account. I looked at a few of the bookmarks and the comments that were added. I like the fact that you can access your bookmarks from any computer.

Week 5 #12 Rollyo

I went into Rollyo and set up an account. I created a recipe searchroll and added it to my blog, the link is at the bottom on the right. I added some of the sites that I have used. You can use it to search for recipes. I can see how this can be helpful for someone that goes to the same sites all the time.

Week 5 LibraryThing

I signed up for LibraryThing. I found it very easy to add books to my Library. I think this is a great site. You can get recommendations on what to read next. I like the book suggester feature. Here is the link to my library.

Week 4 #9 Merlin

I had heard of Merlin, but I had not gone into the site until this week. I saw a friendly face when I opened up the site. There was Maurice on the front page. I looked at some of the blogs that were listed. I subscribed to Merlin and added a few feeds. I went to feedster, Topix.net, Syndic8.com and Technorati. I liked Technorati the best. I found it was easier to use.

Week 4 #8 RSS feeds

I set up my Bloglines newsreader account and subscribed to 10 newsfeeds. I didn't seem to have any problem creating the account and subscribing to the newsfeeds. I looked through the most popular feeds and found a few that I thought I would be interested in.

I was able to add my list of feeds to my blog. It took me a number of times to figure out how to put the feeds on my blog. Thanks to Deb and directions from Lindabeekeeper I was finally able to add them.

Week 3 #7 Technology interest

This is my blog post about anything technology related that interests me this week. I enjoy using my digital camera. I want to learn more about how to take better sports pictures and also to learn more about photo editing software. I would like to be able to take more action photos and to be able to improve the quality of the photos using the editing software.

Week 3 #6 Flickr tools

I went to the Flickr trading card maker site and created this trading card for my granddaughter.

Week 1 #2 Lifelong Learning

I am going back to week 1 #2 and posting a comment about the 7 1/2 habits of lifelong learning.
I think the hardest for me will be habit # 4 to have confidence in yourself as a competent effective learner. I'm not sure which one will be the easiest. I am just going to try and take each step and hopefully I will be able to learn how to use technology to my advantage and to have fun along the way.

My First Post

I attended the HCPL Tech Fair and I am a little nervous, but also excited about starting Learning 2.0. I am excited about being able to learn about the technology that is available and to be able to Play.
